Summer Tuesdays come alive on the MCA terrace with free concerts highlighting artists from Chicago’s internationally renowned music community. Enjoy live music while relaxing on the lawn with your own picnic or savor snacks and drinks available for purchase. Then head inside to catch the MCA’s summer exhibitions—we’re open late on Tuesdays and free for Illinois residents.
This week Chicago-based drummer Alejandro Salazar blends Afro-Cuban and Black American traditions into joyful, groove-driven performances rooted in love, unity, and swing. A 2025 Luminarts Fellow, he’s a rising star whose dynamic playing has lit up stages from Chicago to international festivals.
About the Artist
Alejandro Salazar emphasizes love, peace, and unity through performance, education, and the cultural study of Afro-Cuban and Black American music. A rising star deeply rooted in tradition, he explores new ways to get audiences moving with his infectious swing feel.
Named a 2025 Luminarts Fellow, Salazar has performed at clubs, venues, and festivals across Chicago and internationally, including the Chicago Jazz Festival, Hyde Park Jazz Festival, Jazz à la Villette (Paris), Primavera Sound Barcelona, Munch Museum (Oslo), Bourse de Commerce (Paris), Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, The Jazz Showcase, Andy’s Jazz Club, DuSable Museum, The Green Mill, Constellation, and Dorian’s. He has shared the stage with master musicians such as Bobby Watson, Jon Faddis, Robert Irving III, Emmet Cohen, Willie Pickens, Angel Bat Dawid, Sharel Cassity, Marques Carroll, Junius Paul, Alexis Lombre, Tito Carrillo, Scott Hesse, Victor Garcia, Rajiv Halim, Ernest Dawkins, Coco Elysses, Anthony Bruno, and Ira Sullivan, among many others.
