MCA Collection Spotlight

The MCA’s permanent collection is the heart of the museum. Made up of works of art purchased by the museum as well as those donated by members of our community, it contains more than 3,000 works and is ever growing and changing as new pieces are acquired—and as our perspectives on art evolve.

Before a work enters the MCA Collection, the museum considers several factors. First, does it meet our criteria that any great work of art must be beautiful, intelligent, and necessary? Does it add depth and complexity to the collection or fill in an existing gap in to tell a more robust story of art? Does it offer a fresh perspective or feature an innovative practice that pushes the collection in new directions altogether? And finally, how might the MCA contribute to its care and preservation to ensure generations of art lovers may enjoy it?

The MCA highlights a rotating selection of collection works both inside the museum and here in our digital space, each chosen for its level of excellence and its relevance to our time. We invite you to revisit our space, both in person and online, to explore new or notable works as we continue to expand and enrich our collection.
